Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a partner?
No. Swing dancing is a social dance and we change partners often.
There is no need for you to bring a partner.
You will meet plenty of people of all levels of experience learning to dance.
Don't be afraid to go up to someone, introduce yourself and ask them for a dance. Ladies, it's okay to ask a guy to dance!

I've never danced before. Will I be able to do this?
Sure! We teach a basic lesson before every dance that is especially for people who have never danced before. We will have you swingin' before the night is out!

How much does it cost?

Dances are $7 including the basic lesson, and workshops are $12.
The workshop price includes the dance to follow.

Do you have a group rate or discount?
Not at this time, but as our scene grows, such incentives will likely be available.

Where are dances held?
Check out our Venue page.

What should I wear?
You should wear something comfortable that allows freedom of movement. Some of our summer dances get quite warm, so you might think about wearing something light because you will perspire. While jeans and a t-shirt are perfectly fine, it's always fun to see dancers dress in period clothing.

Do I need special shoes?
Yes, and no. You need to wear comfortable shoes that will stay on your feet. Please do NOT wear flip flops! We discourage extremely high heels for ladies, because it's very easy to twist an ankle. We also discourage sneakers with rubber soles, because the rubber sticks to the floor and can make it hard to spin and turn. Shoes with suede, leather, or felt on the soles are ideal. Most dress shoes will work just fine. Many dancers bring sneakers or keds with a flat sole and cover the ball of the shoe with duct tape or painter's tape. Others glue strips of felt or suede to the bottom. You may also choose to purchase official swing dance shoes from a specialty store, but they are not required.

Is there adult supervision for my child?
We at Denton Swing Organization do our best to provide a safe dancing environment to all our patrons, however we cannot accept responsibility for unsupervised minors.  A good rule of thumb is that if you would not leave your child by themselves for several hours at a bowling alley or roller rink, then you should probably accompany your child to our dance.

Disclaimer: Denton Swing Dance Organization is not responsible for injuries obtained during our dances. Please dance at your own risk.  We do not supervise minors.
